Boulevard Brewing 35th Anniversary Ale: A Beer Lover’s Celebration

by Leave a Comment

Ah, Boulevard’s 35th Anniversary Ale…a beer brewed to mark a milestone, and wow, does it come with a lot to talk about. First things first, this is a big, bold beer that doesn’t shy away from making a statement. Let’s dive into the glass and see what’s going on.

Appearance

Pouring out of the bottle, the beer showcases a deep mahogany hue with flashes of ruby when held to the light. The head is a creamy, tan foam that lingers just long enough to remind you this beer means business. It’s a looker, no doubt, and it promises richness from the get-go.

Aroma

Boulevard Brewing 35th Anniversary Ale review

The nose is a playground of complexity. Upfront, you’re hit with toasted caramel and dark fruit (think figs and raisins) layered over subtle whiffs of bourbon and oak. A faint kiss of vanilla and a hint of spice add depth. It’s inviting, warm, and a little bit boozy. (Okay, maybe a lot boozy, but we’ll get to that.)

Taste

Here’s where the 35th Anniversary Ale flexes its muscles. The first sip is decadent, with rich caramel malts leading the charge, with molasses and toffee trailing behind. Those dark fruits from the aroma show up in full force, giving it a slight sherry-like sweetness. Then, the bourbon barrel aging kicks in, lending smooth oak, vanilla, and a warming alcohol presence that’s impossible to ignore.

But it’s not all sweetness. There’s a roasty, slightly bitter backbone that keeps the beer from feeling like dessert overload. The balance is impressive, though the booziness occasionally tips the scales a little too far. At 12.5% ABV, this is a sipper, not a guzzler. If you’re not into big beers, the warmth and alcohol might be a bit much.

Mouthfeel

Thick and luxurious, this ale coats your palate like a velvet blanket. Carbonation is on the lower side, which suits its big, bold profile perfectly. Each sip feels indulgent, but by the end of the glass, that richness can be a bit heavy. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you might not want to drink more than one in a sitting.

Overall Impressions

This beer is a celebration in a glass. It’s layered, complex, and wonderfully crafted…exactly what you’d expect from Boulevard when they’re marking a milestone. That said, it’s not without its quirks. The alcohol warmth is a little aggressive, and the sweetness could edge toward cloying if you’re not a fan of big, malty brews. But for those who enjoy barrel aged ales and aren’t afraid of a heavy hitter, this is one to savor.
