Goose Island Hazy Beer Hug IPA Review

by Leave a Comment

When you crack open a Goose Island (Chicago, Illinois) Hazy Beer Hug IPA, you’re greeted with a bright, juicy aroma that screams tropical vibes. It’s like a fruit salad for your nose with mango, pineapple, and a hint of citrus all fighting for attention. The hazy pour follows suit with a pale, golden orange color, topped with a frothy white head that lingers just long enough to feel inviting.

Tasting Notes:
The first sip is a punch of juicy fruitiness. The mango and pineapple dominate upfront, balanced with a citrusy backbone—think orange zest with a slight hint of grapefruit. There’s also a bit of a sweet malt profile that keeps things smooth. It’s medium-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel that coats the palate in a very satisfying way, making it easy to drink more than you probably planned.

However, this is where things get a bit tricky. For a hazy IPA, the bitterness comes through stronger than expected, especially toward the finish. It’s not a palate wrecker by any means, but if you’re used to smoother, less bitter hazies, it might catch you off guard. Some might enjoy this extra bite, while others could find it clashes with the otherwise juicy profile.

Mouthfeel & Drinkability:
This beer is incredibly soft and smooth, with just enough carbonation to keep it lively. That creamy texture is a win, making each sip feel lush. At 6.8% ABV, it’s got enough punch to let you know you’re drinking an IPA, but it won’t knock you out after just one or two. That being said, the bitterness might slow your roll if you’re expecting an all-day sipper.

Final Thoughts:
Goose Island Hazy Beer Hug IPA delivers big on tropical flavors and that hazy, juicy experience we all love in this style. The bitterness, while surprising, doesn’t ruin the experience, but it might be divisive depending on what you expect from your hazies. Overall, it’s a solid, enjoyable IPA with a little extra edge.

Ratings:

  • Aroma: 8/10
  • Appearance: 9/10
  • Taste: 7.5/10
  • Mouthfeel: 8.5/10
  • Overall Drinkability: 7.5/10

Verdict: If you love a fruity, tropical IPA but don’t mind a bit of bitterness, Hazy Beer Hug is worth adding to your fridge. Just don’t expect a 100% smooth ride—there’s a hoppy kick waiting for you at the end!
