Goose Island Oktoberfest 2024 Review

by Leave a Comment

Ah, Oktoberfest season! It’s that time of year when breweries roll out their fall specialties, and Goose Island’s (Chicago, Illinois) 2024 Oktoberfest doesn’t disappoint. Here’s the lowdown on this year’s edition of their festbier.

First Impressions:
From the moment you crack open the can (or bottle), the malty aroma hits you. It’s got that rich, bready smell typical of a good Oktoberfest. The color? Beautiful amber – exactly what you want to see in a fall beer. There’s a nice, foamy head that sticks around long enough to let you know this beer means business.

Tasting Notes:
On the first sip, you get a solid malt backbone. It’s smooth and slightly sweet, with notes of caramel and toffee, but not overly sugary – just enough to give you that autumn warmth. It’s got a nice biscuity flavor too, which pairs perfectly with the toasty malt. You can tell Goose Island stuck close to the traditional Marzen style, but it’s a little lighter and more approachable than some of the heavier Oktoberfest beers out there. This makes it great for a longer drinking session – you could easily see yourself downing a couple of these at a fall BBQ or a casual get-together.

The hop profile is mild, which is exactly what you’d expect from this style. You get just enough bitterness to balance out the sweetness, but it’s really the malt that shines here. There’s a subtle floral note from the hops, but it’s nothing overpowering – just enough to keep things interesting.

Mouthfeel and Finish:
The mouthfeel is spot-on. It’s smooth and medium-bodied, with just the right amount of carbonation to keep it refreshing. The finish is clean with a slight lingering sweetness, but again, nothing too intense. It’s one of those beers that feels comforting – like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket on a crisp autumn day.

The Positives:

  • Malt-forward: Rich caramel, biscuit, and toffee flavors really hit the spot.
  • Smooth and approachable: While it’s a flavorful brew, it’s not too heavy, making it easy to drink a few without feeling weighed down.
  • Well-balanced: The mild hop bitterness plays a supporting role, which works well for this style.
  • Great for fall: This is a solid option for fall gatherings, tailgates, or sitting around a fire pit with friends.

The Negatives:

  • Could use a bit more complexity: While the malt-forward taste is pleasant, it doesn’t have the layers of flavor some other Oktoberfest beers offer. A little more spice or depth might take it to the next level.
  • Slightly too sweet for some: If you’re not a fan of sweeter beers, this one might lean a bit too much into the caramel for your liking.

Final Rating:

  • Appearance: 8.5/10 – Gorgeous amber color with a great head.
  • Aroma: 8/10 – Rich malty aroma, but nothing too out of the ordinary.
  • Taste: 8/10 – Solid malt flavors, but could use a bit more complexity.
  • Mouthfeel: 9/10 – Smooth, refreshing, and easy-drinking.
  • Overall: 8.5/10 – A strong showing for an American Oktoberfest. It’s flavorful, balanced, and perfect for fall, even if it lacks a little in depth compared to some of the more traditional versions.

In short, Goose Island’s Oktoberfest 2024 is a winner if you’re looking for a drinkable, malt-forward beer for fall. It’s got that classic festbier vibe without being too heavy, making it a great choice for any autumn occasion.
