Beer Review: Bell’s Hopslam IPA

by Leave a Comment

Bell’s (Kalamazoo, Michigan) Hopslam IPA is a fan favorite that really lives up to its name, packing a big punch of hops and honey in every sip. Crafted by Bell’s Brewery, this double IPA is bold, complex, and definitely worth a taste if you’re into well balanced yet powerful flavors. Here’s my take:

First Impressions
Right from the pour, Hopslam has this deep, golden amber hue with a slight haze, topped by a decent layer of foamy head that settles nicely. The aroma is incredibly inviting – a blend of tropical fruit, pine, and a hint of that sweet honey they’re known for. It smells like a full-on citrus explosion with a dash of floral and herbal notes, which sets you up for what’s to come.

Tasting Notes
The flavor profile is where Hopslam really shines. The first sip hits with an intense hop bitterness, but it’s quickly rounded out by the honey sweetness, which doesn’t overpower but adds a nice balance. You get flavors of grapefruit, mango, and apricot, all mixed with that signature piney bitterness that hopheads love. It’s got a sticky, resinous mouthfeel, which makes it feel full-bodied and a bit chewy, in a satisfying way.

The ABV clocks in around 10%, so there’s some boozy warmth as it goes down. It’s smooth enough that you don’t feel overwhelmed, but you’ll definitely know it’s strong. The honey really helps to mellow the edges, giving it a sweetness that sticks around but doesn’t make it cloying.

Positives

  • Bold Flavor: This beer is packed with flavor. Every sip brings new notes, from fruity to floral, and that honey ties it all together.
  • Balance of Bitterness and Sweetness: For a beer with this much hops, it manages to avoid being overwhelmingly bitter. The honey adds a unique balance that’s different from most double IPAs.
  • Nice Mouthfeel: Thick and slightly syrupy, it lingers just the right amount, making each sip an experience.
  • Good Aroma: The smell alone is worth savoring – fruity, piney, and floral all at once.

A Few Downsides

  • Strong Alcohol Presence: While the ABV is part of Hopslam’s charm, it can be a bit much for those not used to higher-alcohol beers. If you’re looking for something lighter, this one might not be for you.
  • Limited Seasonality: This is a seasonal release, so it’s not available year-round, which is a bummer for those who want to keep it in their rotation.
  • Heaviness: This is definitely not a “light” IPA. If you’re in the mood for something more sessionable, Hopslam might feel a bit intense.

Overall Rating

  • Appearance: 4.5/5
  • Aroma: 4.7/5
  • Taste: 4.6/5
  • Mouthfeel: 4.4/5
  • Overall: 4.5/5

Final Thoughts
Bell’s Hopslam IPA is a big, bold, beautifully crafted double IPA that’s as flavorful as it is intense. It’s ideal for anyone who loves a strong hop character but appreciates a bit of sweetness to round it out. Just know that it’s a heavy hitter, so one or two is probably plenty! If you can get your hands on it, it’s a worthy addition to any craft beer enthusiast’s fridge, especially for a special occasion or treat.
