Sierra Nevada Celebration Fresh Hop IPA 2024 – Craft Beer Review

by

Sierra Nevada’s Celebration Fresh Hop IPA is a holiday favorite that brings a lot to the table. This seasonal release from the iconic brewery is a celebration in a bottle, packed with fresh hops that give it a punchy aroma and bold flavor. Whether you’re a diehard IPA fan or just looking for something a bit different in a winter seasonal, this beer is definitely worth checking out.

Appearance

When you pour the Celebration IPA, you’re greeted by a lovely amber hue that catches the light beautifully. It has a decent, off-white head that sticks around a bit longer than you’d expect for an IPA. Overall, the appearance sets a nice tone for what’s to come.

Aroma

The first sniff of this beer is a burst of fresh hops, floral and resinous, with a slight piney undertone. You can also catch hints of citrus (think grapefruit and pineapples) that get you excited for the sip ahead. It’s not overwhelmingly bitter, which makes it approachable for those who are sometimes cautious with hoppy brews.

Taste

The taste is where Celebration Fresh Hop IPA truly shines. The fresh hops really come through, offering a solid balance of bitterness and sweetness. The first sip is full of bright, zesty citrus flavors, like orange peel and a touch of pine, but it’s quickly followed by a malt backbone that’s caramel-like, giving the beer some body and sweetness to counteract the bitterness. It’s a perfect mix of hop-forward and balanced. As it warms, a bit of resinous pine and earthy flavors come through, adding complexity to each sip.

There’s a little bit of a bready, toasted character toward the end, which gives it a bit of depth. It’s clean and refreshing, but with a nice layer of complexity that makes it a little more interesting than your average IPA.

Mouthfeel

This IPA has a medium body that’s just right…not too heavy but still satisfying. It’s got a nice level of carbonation that gives it a little zip without being too prickly. The mouthfeel is smooth enough to keep you coming back for more but with enough bitterness to let you know this is an IPA through and through.

Aftertaste

The aftertaste is crisp and clean, with lingering hop bitterness and a subtle piney note. It doesn’t stick around too long, which I appreciate. This is one of those beers where you’re ready for another sip almost immediately. There’s a slight dryness that encourages you to keep drinking.

Overall Impressions

Sierra Nevada Celebration Fresh Hop IPA is a strong seasonal release that delivers what it promises: fresh, bold hops balanced by malt sweetness. It’s perfect for those cold nights by the fire or as a standout offering at holiday gatherings. The fresh hops bring a sense of vibrancy that makes it stand out from your typical IPA.

However, as much as I enjoy this beer, I’ll be honest…sometimes the bitterness can be a little much for people who aren’t as into hoppier brews. It’s not overly harsh, but for someone who’s new to IPAs, it might take a couple of sips to warm up to. Also, while the malt backbone is solid, I wouldn’t mind a little more depth or complexity to balance out the hops.

Rating

Appearance: 4.5/5 – Beautiful amber color and good head retention.
Aroma: 4.5/5 – Bright, fresh hops with citrus and piney notes.
Taste: 4.5/5 – Fresh, well-balanced, and flavorful, with a nice malt backbone.
Mouthfeel: 4/5 – Smooth, medium-bodied with a good carbonation level.
Aftertaste: 4/5 – Crisp and clean, but with a lingering bitterness.

Overall: 4.5/5 – Sierra Nevada’s 2024 version of their Celebration IPA is a standout, especially if you love fresh hop beers. It’s got everything you want in a winter IPA (freshness, bitterness, and a solid malt base) but it may not be for everyone if you’re not a fan of bold hops. Still, it’s a great seasonal offering that’s well worth trying. If you haven’t had it yet, go grab one before it’s gone for the season!
