Boulevard Baltic Porter: A Cozy Winter Hug in a Glass

by

Boulevard Brewing’s Baltic Porter is one of those beers that makes you want to wrap yourself in a blanket and toast to the magic of dark brews. It’s rich, malty, and warming…a perfect sipper for chilly evenings. While it has plenty going for it, there are a few quirks that might not appeal to everyone. Let’s dive in.

First Impressions

Pouring this porter is an experience in itself. It greets you with a deep, dark brown body capped by a creamy tan head that lingers like a good friend at the bar. The aroma is inviting, full of chocolate, roasted malt, and a hint of dark fruit (think dried cherries or figs).

Tasting Notes

Boulevard Baltic Porter review

Take a sip, and you’re greeted with a symphony of flavors. Upfront, it’s all about the chocolate…like biting into a bittersweet bar with a touch of espresso. There’s a gentle sweetness, but it’s balanced out by roasted malts and a whisper of smokiness. As it warms up, more complex notes come into play: molasses, toffee, and those dark fruits from the aroma make an encore appearance.

The body is medium to full, smooth and creamy, which makes it almost dangerously drinkable for its ABV (8.5%). There’s a warming sensation that spreads through your chest, but the alcohol is well hidden in the flavor. No harsh booziness here.

What Stands Out

Positives: The balance in this beer is its superpower. The sweet, roasty, and slightly fruity flavors are harmonized beautifully. It’s also surprisingly versatile. It’s great as a standalone sipper or paired with desserts like chocolate cake or even smoked meats.

Negatives: If you’re not a fan of sweeter porters, this one might come off as slightly cloying. Additionally, while it’s smooth, the finish could use a bit more bitterness to keep everything in check. Some beer enthusiasts might find it leans too much into dessert territory rather than delivering the bracing sharpness they want in a dark beer.

Rating

Appearance: 9/10 – Gorgeous pour, great head retention, and inviting color.
Aroma: 8.5/10 – Rich, roasty, and fruity, though it could use a touch more complexity.
Taste: 9/10 – Deliciously smooth and layered, but just a smidge on the sweet side.
Mouthfeel: 9/10 – Creamy and luxurious, with just the right level of carbonation.
Overall: 8.7/10 – A standout Baltic Porter that’s rich, flavorful, and perfect for winter. It’s not for everyone, but fans of sweet, complex dark beers will love it.

Final Thoughts

Boulevard Baltic Porter feels like an indulgent treat…a beer you savor slowly, letting its layers reveal themselves. While it might not satisfy those seeking a drier, more bitter experience, it’s a fantastic example of the style. Whether you’re cozying up by the fire or impressing friends with a bottle at your next gathering, this brew deserves a spot in your winter rotation.
