Uinta Brewing Detour Double IPA Review

by Leave a Comment

Uinta Brewing’s Detour Double IPA is a bold, hop-forward ale that caters to those who appreciate high intensity flavors balanced with drinkability. Brewed in Salt Lake City, Utah, Detour DIPA is one Uinta’s flagship big hopped offerings, boasting a robust ABV of 9.5% and 96 IBUs, making it a strong yet approachable double IPA.

Appearance (4.5/5)
Detour pours a deep, slightly hazy amber-gold with a thick, frothy off-white head that lingers. The carbonation is lively, and as the foam settles, it leaves intricate lacing on the glass.

Aroma (4/5)
The nose is packed with classic West Coast IPA characteristics, such as pine, citrus, and floral hops, backed by hints of caramel malt sweetness. Notes of grapefruit, orange zest, and resinous pine dominate, with a slight boozy warmth peeking through. There’s also a subtle dankness, giving it an earthy depth.

Taste (4.2/5)
Detour doesn’t hold back on hop bitterness, delivering a bold punch of pine, grapefruit, and tropical fruit up front. The malt backbone adds a caramel-like sweetness that balances the aggressive hop bitterness, preventing it from becoming overwhelming. Mid-palate, flavors of mango, tangerine, and honeydew make an appearance, providing some complexity. The finish is resinous, slightly dry, and long lasting, with a lingering piney bitterness that reminds you this is a true Double IPA.

Mouthfeel (4/5)
For a high ABV double IPA, Detour is surprisingly smooth and medium-bodied, with a slightly sticky texture. The carbonation is moderate, which keeps it refreshing despite its boozy heft. The alcohol warmth is noticeable but not overpowering, making it deceptively drinkable for a nearly 10% ABV beer.

Overall (4.3/5)
Detour Double IPA is a very nice, hop-forward West Coast style DIPA with a rich malt backbone that provides a bit more sweetness than some of its drier, more aggressively bitter counterparts. The balance between citrusy, piney bitterness and caramel malt sweetness makes it enjoyable for both hop heads and those who appreciate a more rounded IPA experience.

While it doesn’t break new ground in the double IPA category, it delivers on everything you’d expect…big hops, bold bitterness, and a strong ABV without being overly harsh. This beer pairs well with spicy foods, grilled meats, and sharp cheeses, making it a versatile choice for hop lovers looking for a satisfying, flavorful DIPA.

Final Rating 4.3/5

Pros:

  • Bold hop aroma and flavor
  • Well-balanced malt backbone
  • Smooth for a 9.5% ABV beer

Cons:

  • Slightly boozy finish
  • Could be a bit more tropical or juicy for variety

If you’re looking for a classic West Coast Double IPA with strong hop character and a touch of malt sweetness, Detour is a solid choice. A solid beer for IPA enthusiasts who appreciate a piney, citrus-forward profile with a satisfying kick.
