Abita Brewing AlphaGator Imperial IPA Review

by Leave a Comment

AlphaGator Imperial IPA is a bold and hop-forward offering from Abita Brewing Company, one of Louisiana’s most well known craft breweries. Located just north of New Orleans in Abita Springs, Louisiana, Abita has built a strong reputation for blending Southern character with innovative brewing techniques. AlphaGator stands out in their lineup as a high-ABV (9%) imperial IPA, boasting aggressive hop flavors balanced with a sturdy malt backbone.

Appearance (4/5)
AlphaGator pours a golden-amber hue with a slight haze, typical of many imperial IPAs. A thick, frothy off-white head lingers nicely, leaving behind sticky lacing on the glass as it recedes. It’s an inviting beer that visually signals the boldness to come.

Aroma (4.1/5)
The nose is citrus-heavy, with grapefruit, orange zest, and tangerine leading the way. There’s a distinct resinous pine note from the hops, complemented by a mild caramel malt sweetness. A hint of tropical fruit…possibly mango or pineapple, adds depth, making for an aromatic and enticing introduction.

Taste (4/5)
Hop lovers will appreciate the West Coast-style bitterness upfront, with resinous pine, grapefruit pith, and herbal notes dominating the first sip. As the beer opens up, some honey-like malt sweetness emerges, helping to balance out the intensity. The finish is dry, slightly dank, and lingers with a pleasant citrusy bitterness. The % ABV is well hidden, with just a touch of warmth present in the back end.

Mouthfeel (3.9/5)
Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation, AlphaGator drinks smoothly for an imperial IPA. The bitterness is assertive but doesn’t overwhelm the palate, and the alcohol remains well integrated. It has a slightly sticky resin quality, which suits the style well.

Overall Impression (4/5)
AlphaGator is a bold and hop-forward imperial IPA that delivers on flavor and intensity while maintaining drinkability. The blend of citrus, pine, and malt balance makes it a solid choice for fans of classic West Coast-style IPAs.

For those who enjoy strong, hop centric beers with a balanced malt backbone, AlphaGator is worth seeking out. It pairs well with spicy Cajun dishes, grilled meats, or sharp cheeses, making it a great match for Louisiana’s bold culinary traditions.

Final Rating: 4/5

Pros

  • Bold citrus and pine hop profile
  • Well balanced malt backbone
  • Smooth mouthfeel for an imperial IPA
  • Great for fans of traditional West Coast-style bitterness

Cons

  • Could use a touch more tropical complexity
  • Slightly resinous finish might not appeal to all

Verdict
AlphaGator earns points for its bold flavor profile and drinkability, though it may not stand out among the most innovative or complex Imperial IPAs on the market. It’s a great choice for hop enthusiasts looking for a reliable, high quality brew with a touch of Southern character.
