Beer Review: Founders Centennial IPA

by Leave a Comment

If you’re on the hunt for a rock-solid, reliable IPA that doesn’t skimp on flavor, Founders (Grand Rapids, Michigan) Centennial IPA deserves a spot on your radar. This brew is a quintessential American IPA, showcasing the bold character of Centennial hops while maintaining a smooth drinkability that even non-hopheads might appreciate. Here’s the lowdown:

First Impressions
Right out of the bottle (or can), the pour is a deep amber with a slight copper hue. The frothy, off-white head sticks around just long enough to lace your glass in a way that screams, “This beer means business.” Aromatically, it’s a treat: think big citrus notes like grapefruit and lemon zest, complemented by a floral backbone and just a hint of pine. There’s also a faint whisper of caramel malt sweetness lurking underneath.

Tasting Notes
The flavor profile is exactly what you’d hope for in an IPA that prides itself on its namesake hop. The Centennial hops shine with vibrant bursts of citrus and floral bitterness. Grapefruit pith and orange peel hit your palate first, followed by a wave of piney resin. There’s a balancing act here, thanks to a subtle caramel malt sweetness that rounds out the edges without stealing the spotlight.

The bitterness is noticeable but not overwhelming, clocking in at 65 IBUs, making it bold without being palate-wrecking. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with just enough carbonation to keep things lively. The finish is crisp and dry, inviting another sip (and then another).

Positives

Balanced Flavor: The interplay between the Centennial hops and malt is spot on. It’s complex but not overwhelming.
Aromatics: The nose is inviting, bright, and indicative of what’s to come.
Drinkability: For a 7.2% ABV beer, it’s surprisingly smooth and doesn’t come across as overly boozy. You could comfortably have one (or two) without feeling overwhelmed.
Versatility: This IPA pairs wonderfully with spicy dishes, sharp cheeses, or even a good ol’ burger. It’s a go-to choice for backyard hangs or hearty meals.

Negatives

Hop Profile: While the Centennial hops are expertly showcased, the single hop approach might leave some craving more variety in the flavor. It’s a “what you see is-what you get” kind of IPA, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but might feel one dimensional to seasoned craft beer lovers.
Bitterness Curve: While it’s not overly aggressive, the bitterness can linger on the finish longer than expected, which could be off-putting to those who prefer more rounded IPAs.
Availability: Founders Centennial IPA is widely distributed, but that can make it feel less “special” compared to smaller, harder to find craft offerings.

Final Verdict
Founders Centennial IPA is a prime example of why IPAs became a cornerstone of the craft beer movement. It’s flavorful, balanced, and approachable enough to please a range of palates. While it doesn’t push any boundaries or surprise you with unexpected twists, its quality and consistency make it a standout in its category.

Rating:

  • Appearance: 8/10
  • Aroma: 9/10
  • Flavor: 8.5/10
  • Mouthfeel: 8/10
  • Overall: 8.5/10

Would I buy it again? Absolutely. Is it a game changer? Maybe not, but sometimes you don’t need a game changer, you just need a beer that’s downright good. Founders Centennial IPA fits that bill perfectly.
