Beer Review: Free State Ad Astra

by Leave a Comment

Overall Rating: 8/10
Style: Amber Ale
ABV: 5.6%

Free State Ad Astra is a smooth and approachable amber ale that’s just as much about balance as it is about flavor. Hailing from Free State Brewing Company in Lawrence, Kansas, this brew is named after the state motto, “Ad Astra per Aspera,” meaning “to the stars through difficulties.” And while it doesn’t quite take you to the cosmos, it’s certainly a solid beer that feels rooted and reliable.

Appearance

Rating: 8.5/10
Ad Astra pours a deep amber with a slight reddish hue, almost copper-like when it catches the light. A thin, off-white head crowns the beer, offering decent retention and a touch of lacing. It’s a good looking beer that screams “classic craft” without being over the top.

Aroma

Rating: 7.5/10
The nose is pleasant but not mind blowing. You’ll catch caramel and toasty malt right away, along with hints of brown sugar and maybe a whisper of nuttiness. There’s a faint floral hop aroma in the background, but it’s subtle. Don’t expect your nostrils to get punched with hops here.

Taste

Rating: 9/10
This is where Ad Astra shines. The malt-forward character is front and center, with notes of caramel, biscuit, and a gentle roastiness that reminds you of toasted bread. The sweetness is perfectly dialed in…not cloying, but enough to make each sip smooth and satisfying.

There’s a mild hop bitterness on the finish, offering just enough balance to keep things interesting. The hops bring a slightly earthy, herbal quality, which works well against the malt backbone. It’s not overly complex, but it’s well executed and drinkable.

That said, if you’re a hop head or someone who loves bold, experimental flavors, Ad Astra might not push the envelope for you. It plays it safe, but sometimes, that’s exactly what you’re looking for.

Mouthfeel

Rating: 8/10
The body is medium with moderate carbonation…smooth, soft, and easy-drinking. There’s a slight creaminess to the texture that adds to its overall comfort. It feels like a warm blanket in beer form. A bit more crispness could elevate it, but it’s still thoroughly enjoyable as is.

Final Thoughts

Ad Astra is a fantastic beer for when you want something reliable and flavorful but not overly heavy or complex. It’s the kind of brew you can introduce to your “not sure about craft beer” friends without scaring them off. The malt character is warm and inviting, while the subtle hops give just enough balance to keep it from veering into dessert territory.

That said, if you’re a fan of more adventurous or hop-forward styles, you might find Ad Astra a bit tame. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, but what it does, it does well. Think of it as the beer equivalent of a favorite flannel shirt…comfortable, familiar, and always a good choice.
