Beer Review: Main & Mill OctoberFestus

by

Hey there, beer lovers! Today, I cracked open a bottle of Main & Mill OctoberFestus (Main & Mill Brewing is located in Festus, MO…hence the name) and let me tell you, it’s got some serious character. As a Märzen-style Oktoberfest lager, it’s exactly what you’d expect this time of year—malty, smooth, and a real celebration in a glass. But it’s not without a few quirks that I’ll touch on too. Let’s dive in!

First Impressions
The pour is stunning. OctoberFestus has that deep amber color that practically screams “fall.” It’s a rich, coppery hue with a nice foamy head that sticks around for a bit. Visually, this beer nails it, setting the stage for a cozy drinking experience.

Main & Mill OctoberFestus review

Aroma
Right off the bat, you get a wave of toasted malts on the nose, with hints of caramel and bread crust. It’s like walking into a bakery on a crisp autumn morning. There’s also a subtle nuttiness and a touch of earthy hops in the background, which adds some nice depth. It’s balanced and inviting…definitely makes you want to take that first sip.

Taste
And that first sip? Super smooth. The malt profile is the star here )think caramel, toffee, and a bit of biscuit sweetness). It’s rich without being overpowering. There’s a slight spiciness that comes through, probably from the hops, but they’re dialed way back, as they should be for this style. You’re not going to get a big punch of bitterness; instead, it’s more of a gentle nudge, which works well to keep things balanced.

The mouthfeel is medium-bodied and just the right amount of creamy, making it incredibly drinkable. The carbonation is spot on too. Not too fizzy but enough to keep things lively on the palate.

Criticism
Now, for the slight downside: It leans a bit sweeter than some other Märzen style beers I’ve had. If you’re a fan of drier finishes, this might not be your favorite aspect of OctoberFestus. The sweetness lingers just a touch longer than I’d like, and that can make it feel a bit heavier as you work your way through the pint. A touch more dryness or bitterness on the finish could elevate this from good to great.

Pairing
This is the kind of beer that screams for hearty food. Grab a bratwurst, some pretzels with mustard, or a plate of roasted chicken, and you’ll be in Oktoberfest heaven. The malt sweetness complements the saltiness of pub food really well, and it’s easy to imagine yourself at a beer hall with this one in hand.

Ratings

  • Appearance: 9/10
Gorgeous amber color with a lasting head. Definitely pulls you in visually.
  • Aroma: 8.5/10
Lovely malt-forward nose with some subtle hop and spice notes.
  • Taste: 8/10
Rich, malty, and smooth. Could use a bit more balance with the sweetness, but still a solid brew.
  • Mouthfeel: 8.5/10
Smooth and creamy with just the right carbonation level.
  • Overall: 8.2/10

Main & Mill OctoberFestus is a great Märzen style lager that delivers on the malt-forward promise of Oktoberfest beers. It might run a little sweet for some, but it’s still a delightful seasonal treat that’s hard to put down.

In short, if you’re looking for a festive fall beer to enjoy with friends and a plate of hearty food, OctoberFestus is a solid pick.
