Beer Review: Odell Brewing Myrcenary Double IPA

by Leave a Comment

If you’re a hop head looking for your next adventure, Odell Brewing’s Myrcenary Double IPA is a ride worth taking. Named after myrcene, a terpene in hops that contributes those bold, aromatic notes we all love, this beer promises, and delivers, big flavor.

First Impressions

Pouring Myrcenary into a glass is a visual treat. It greets you with a glowing golden-orange hue topped by a creamy, off-white head that lingers just enough to keep things interesting. The aroma hits you immediately with juicy tropical fruits like mango and pineapple, followed by a whiff of citrusy grapefruit zest. Underneath all that is a hint of resinous pine, a subtle nod to its hoppy backbone.

Tasting Notes

Odell Myrcenary Double IPA

The first sip is like a flavor explosion. It’s a juicy, hop-forward beer with a rich balance of sweetness and bitterness. The tropical fruit notes take center stage with ripe mango, tangerine, and a bit of peach. But what really makes this beer shine is its balance. While it’s hop-heavy (it is a double IPA, after all), the malt base adds just enough caramel sweetness to smooth things out.

The bitterness, clocking in at 70 IBUs, is present but not overwhelming. Instead, it lingers pleasantly, making you want to dive back in for another sip. The 9.3% ABV is well hidden. There’s a warming sensation toward the end, but it’s more comforting than boozy.

The finish? Crisp and dry, with a faint resinous note that reminds you this beer means business. It’s bold, yet surprisingly easy to drink for a double IPA.

What Stands Out

Pros: The balance here is incredible. Odell nails the tricky dance of delivering hop intensity without sacrificing drinkability. The tropical fruit flavors are juicy and vibrant, and the subtle malt sweetness ties it all together.
Cons: If you’re not into bold IPAs or higher ABVs, Myrcenary might be a bit much. Also, while the finish is clean, it leans slightly on the resinous side, which may not be everyone’s favorite.

Final Verdict

Odell Brewing’s Myrcenary Double IPA is a master class in balance. It’s bold, juicy, and hoppy, yet surprisingly smooth and approachable for a beer of its style and strength. While it might not be everyone’s go-to (especially for those not into big, resinous finishes), it’s a great choice for IPA enthusiasts or anyone who appreciates a well-crafted brew. Grab a pint (or a bomber) and treat yourself to this hop-forward gem.
