Beer Review: Samuel Adams Winter Lager 2024

by Leave a Comment

When it comes to seasonal beers, Samuel Adams Winter Lager is one of those that’s been around long enough to feel like a tradition in itself. Every year, it’s like pulling on a favorite sweater…familiar, cozy, and packed with winter vibes. This year’s brew doesn’t disappoint, but it does have its quirks.

First Impressions
The pour is a deep amber, almost ruby, with a fluffy off-white head that lingers just long enough to be appreciated. Right away, you’re hit with aromas of warm spices (think cinnamon, nutmeg, and a whisper of ginger) blended with a malty sweetness. There’s also a subtle citrusy zing that cuts through, hinting at the orange peel they use.

Taste Profile
Taking that first sip feels like a hug in beer form. The malt backbone is front and center, offering up a smooth and slightly sweet caramel flavor. Those holiday spices definitely make themselves known, but they’re not overwhelming. It’s a balanced blend, like a well-made gingerbread cookie, but without tasting too cloying or artificial.

The citrus notes from the orange peel add a bright pop, which helps keep the beer from feeling too heavy. There’s also a touch of bitterness on the back end…nothing too harsh, just enough to remind you it’s still a lager and not a dessert.

The Positives

  • Balanced Flavor: The malt and spices work well together, creating a warm and inviting flavor profile that screams “holiday.”
  • Drinkability: At 5.6% ABV, it’s sessionable enough to have more than one without feeling like you’ve overindulged.
  • Seasonal Spirit: This beer really nails the winter theme. It’s comforting, festive, and feels right at home next to a roaring fire.

The Negatives

  • Spice Overload for Some: While the spices are balanced for the most part, they might come across as too strong if you’re not into spiced beers.
  • Lack of Complexity: It’s tasty, but it doesn’t evolve much as you drink it. What you taste in the first sip is pretty much what you get all the way through.
  • Carbonation: It feels a little on the low side, which might make it seem heavier than it actually is.

Final Thoughts and Ratings
Samuel Adams Winter Lager is like the beer equivalent of a warm, fuzzy blanket. It’s approachable, comforting, and full of holiday cheer. Sure, it might not blow you away with complexity, and the spice level might not be for everyone, but it’s a solid seasonal brew that hits most of the right notes.

Ratings:

  • Appearance: 8/10
  • Aroma: 8.5/10
  • Taste: 8/10
  • Mouthfeel: 7.5/10
  • Overall: 8/10

If you’re a fan of spiced beers or just looking for something to sip on while you plan your holiday festivities, this one’s worth adding to your lineup. It’s a winter classic for a reason!
