Beer Review: Schlafly Oktoberfest 2024

by Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for a seasonal brew that brings all the vibes of fall, Schlafly Oktoberfest might just hit the spot! This Märzen style lager, brewed by the St. Louis-based Schlafly Beer, has all the toasty, malty goodness you’d expect from an Oktoberfest beer with a few unique touches.

First Impressions

Appearance: Poured into the glass, Schlafly Oktoberfest has a rich, amber color that practically glows in the light. It’s topped with a creamy, off-white head that sticks around just long enough to feel satisfying. The beer looks as inviting as a crisp autumn day.

Aroma: The aroma immediately gives off sweet, bready malt scents, like you’re walking past a bakery that’s just pulled out a fresh loaf. There’s also a hint of caramel and a little whiff of earthy hops, but nothing too overpowering. If you close your eyes, you can almost imagine the Oktoberfest tents and bratwurst sizzling nearby.

Taste and Mouthfeel

On the first sip, you’re greeted with a smooth wave of malt flavors—think toasted bread, caramel, and a slight nuttiness. It’s not too sweet, though, which is great. The bitterness is subtle, giving it just enough balance without being overly hoppy. The finish is clean with a hint of spice, making it very drinkable, especially if you’re into malt-forward beers.

One thing to love about Schlafly Oktoberfest is its medium body. It’s not too heavy, but there’s still enough richness to remind you that you’re drinking a fall beer meant to be savored. The carbonation is just right too—lively but not fizzy, leaving a smooth and slightly creamy mouthfeel.

Positives

  • Great balance of flavors: The malt character shines through without being too sweet or heavy, making it super drinkable for a Märzen-style lager.
  • Mellow bitterness: The hops play a background role, giving it just enough bite to prevent it from being cloying.
  • Sessionable: At 5.5% ABV, it’s perfect for enjoying a couple without feeling like you’ve overdone it, making it an excellent choice for Oktoberfest celebrations or tailgating parties.

A Few Negatives

While Schlafly Oktoberfest hits a lot of high notes, there are a couple of small things to keep in mind:

  • Lack of complexity: If you’re someone who enjoys a more complex beer experience with layers of flavor, this one might feel a little straightforward. It’s very malt-centric, and while that’s not necessarily bad, it could leave hop heads wanting more.
  • Could be richer: For a Märzen, it could benefit from a bit more depth and fullness in body. Some people might find it a tad lighter than expected for the style.

Final Rating:

  • Appearance: 8.5/10
  • Aroma: 8/10
  • Taste: 8.5/10
  • Mouthfeel: 8/10
  • Overall: 8/10

Final Thoughts

Schlafly Oktoberfest is a solid choice for those who appreciate a malt-forward, easy-drinking Märzen. It’s got all the toasty, caramel goodness you want in a fall beer, but without being too heavy or overwhelming. Sure, it’s not the most complex Oktoberfest out there, but sometimes you just want a tasty, well-executed brew you can enjoy with friends at a barbecue or bonfire—and this beer delivers on that front.

If you’re a fan of Märzen-style lagers or just looking for something to get you in the fall spirit, Schlafly Oktoberfest is worth a try!
