Beer Review: Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing IPA

by Leave a Comment

If you’re diving into the hazy IPA scene, Sierra Nevada’s Hazy Little Thing IPA is one of those beers that practically begs to be cracked open on a sunny day. It’s got the name recognition of a brewing icon behind it, but does it live up to the hype? Let’s break it down.

First Impressions

Right out of the can, this beer pours a slightly cloudy golden yellow with a frothy white head that sticks around for a bit. It’s not the murkiest hazy out there, which might disappoint those expecting a glass of unfiltered juice. But hey, it still looks inviting.

The nose is where this beer shines. It’s a tropical explosion of pineapple, mango, and some citrus zest, balanced by a light floral quality. There’s a subtle dankness hiding in there too, like it wants you to know it’s got a little bite to back up the sweetness.

Taste

The flavor is where the party’s at. It starts with juicy notes of pineapple, orange, and tangerine, giving way to a softer, slightly creamy mouthfeel. There’s a noticeable malt backbone that keeps the sweetness from going overboard, which is a refreshing change from some hazies that can feel like you’re drinking straight fruit juice.

The bitterness is dialed back but not absent. It’s more of a gentle nudge than a sharp kick. That said, hop heads who crave a resinous punch might find themselves wishing for a bit more oomph. Still, the balance between tropical fruit, light bitterness, and subtle malt makes it super drinkable.

Mouthfeel and Finish

Hazy Little Thing has a medium body with a slightly soft carbonation that adds to its smoothness. The finish is clean with a lingering citrusy hop note. It’s not overly bitter, just enough to remind you this is still an IPA.

Strength

At 6.7% ABV, it’s got a respectable punch, but it’s not so heavy that you can’t enjoy a couple. It straddles that line between sessionable and substantial, making it great for backyard hangouts or low-key nights.

The Verdict

Sierra Nevada’s Hazy Little Thing IPA is an accessible, well-crafted hazy that doesn’t try to overdo it. It’s perfect for folks who love fruity hops without the palate wrecking bitterness. While it might not be the most complex or unique hazy IPA out there, it nails the balance and approachability that has made it a go-to choice for many beer lovers.
