Bell's Hazy Hearted IPA

If you’re familiar with Bell’s Brewery (Kalamazoo, Michigan), you already know they’re pretty much the kings of crafting iconic beers. So, when I heard about their Hazy Hearted IPA, I had to crack one open and see how it stacks up against their already impressive lineup.

First Impressions

Pouring this one into a glass, you immediately notice that classic hazy, golden-orange color that screams “I’m juicy, drink me!” The head is fluffy and white, sticking around just long enough to make you appreciate the effort. There’s definitely that haze you’d expect, and it has that inviting, unfiltered look that sets the stage for what’s to come.

Aroma

The aroma is like a tropical fruit salad—you get a big hit of mango, pineapple, and some stone fruit like peach or apricot. There’s also a nice citrus kick, with grapefruit and orange zest playing along. Underneath, there’s a subtle whiff of pine and maybe just a touch of resin, which adds a nice balance to all that fruitiness.

Taste

Taking the first sip, you’re greeted with a burst of tropical fruit flavors, very much in line with the aroma. Mango and pineapple are front and center, with that grapefruit bitterness sneaking in to keep things interesting. There’s a bit of an orange juice vibe here, which makes the whole experience feel bright and refreshing.

The mouthfeel is smooth and a little creamy, thanks to the oats and wheat that give this beer its signature hazy body. It’s medium-bodied, not too thick, which is perfect for an IPA you might want to sip a few of in one sitting. The finish is where you get a bit of that piney bitterness coming through, reminding you that this is still very much an IPA, despite the haze.

What’s to Love

Honestly, there’s a lot to love here. Bell’s Hazy Hearted IPA delivers on the juicy, fruity profile you’d expect from a hazy IPA, without overdoing it on the sweetness. The balance between the fruitiness and the hoppy bitterness is well-executed, making it a really drinkable beer. It’s got that soft mouthfeel that makes it feel almost luxurious, and at 7.5% ABV, it’s got enough kick to keep things interesting without knocking you out.

A Few Gripes

That said, it’s not without its flaws. If you’re a hardcore West Coast IPA fan, you might find this one a bit on the tame side when it comes to bitterness. The hop bite is there, but it’s definitely more subdued compared to some of the more aggressive IPAs out there. Also, while the tropical flavors are delicious, they can feel a bit one-note after a while. A little more complexity—maybe some additional citrus or spice—could have taken this to the next level.

Final Thoughts

Bell’s Hazy Hearted IPA is a solid entry into the world of hazy IPAs. It’s juicy, balanced, and easy to drink, making it a great choice whether you’re a seasoned IPA drinker or just dipping your toes into the hazy side of things. Sure, it might not blow your mind with bitterness or complexity, but it nails the essentials and delivers a satisfying, refreshing experience. If you’re a fan of hazy IPAs, this one’s definitely worth trying. Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching for another one before you’re done with the first.
