Bell’s Octoberfest Beer 2024 Review

by

Ah, Octoberfest season! And what better way to celebrate than with Bell’s (Kalamazoo, Michigan) Octoberfest? As a fan of fall beers, this one has been on my radar for a while, and I finally cracked open a bottle to see what all the buzz is about. Spoiler alert: it mostly lives up to the hype.

First Impressions
Right out of the bottle, you can tell this is going to be a solid Märzen-style lager. The pour is a rich amber, with a nice, frothy head that sticks around just long enough to make things interesting. It’s got that inviting, deep caramel color that screams autumn in a glass.

Aroma
The aroma hits with a nice balance of malt sweetness and just a touch of toasted bread. It smells like freshly baked biscuits, with a faint hint of spice that makes you think of a cozy fall day. There’s also a subtle herbal hop character, but it’s the malt that really shines in the nose. It’s simple, yet inviting. Definitely has that classic Octoberfest vibe.

Taste
The first sip? Smooth. Really smooth. You get a great balance of sweet maltiness and light bitterness. The caramel and toffee notes come through right away, with a nice bready backbone. There’s a slightly nutty, toasted finish that lingers just the right amount of time. It’s got a medium body, not too heavy, but still full enough to be satisfying on a chilly evening.

There’s a bit of a hop bitterness toward the end that keeps things from getting too sweet or cloying, but don’t expect a hop bomb. Bell’s Octoberfest is all about that malty goodness. If you’re into hoppy beers, this might feel a little too restrained for your taste buds.

Mouthfeel
One of the things I love about this beer is how drinkable it is. The carbonation is on point—enough to give it a little zip without overwhelming you with bubbles. The finish is clean and crisp, just as a good Märzen should be. You could easily down a couple of these at a party or while grilling some brats, no problem.

What Could Be Better
While Bell’s Octoberfest delivers on a lot of fronts, I did find myself wishing for just a bit more complexity. The flavor profile is definitely malt-forward, which is great, but I think it could use a touch more depth in the spice or hop department. It’s very drinkable, but maybe too safe. I wouldn’t mind a bit more oomph to make it stand out in a crowded field of fall beers.

Rating

  • Appearance: 9/10
  • Aroma: 8/10
  • Taste: 8.5/10
  • Mouthfeel: 9/10
  • Overall: 8.5/10

Final Thoughts
Bell’s Octoberfest is a solid entry in the seasonal lineup. It’s not going to blow your mind with complexity, but it nails the classic Märzen style with its smooth maltiness and drinkability. Perfect for a crisp fall afternoon or while watching the leaves change. While I would have liked a little more hop character or spice to make it stand out, it’s still a beer I’d happily reach for again.
