Breckenridge Vanilla Porter: A Balanced Blend of Sweet and Roasty

by

Breckenridge Vanilla Porter is one of those beers that stands out for being rich and flavorful without being overly heavy. It’s perfect for colder weather, or when you’re just in the mood for something a bit more indulgent. Let’s dive into the details!

Appearance: 4/5
Pouring this porter into a glass, you’ll notice a deep, dark brown color, almost bordering on black, with a nice off-white, tan head. The foam retention is decent but doesn’t linger too long, which is fairly typical for the style. You can see some slight reddish hues when you hold it up to the light, giving it a pleasant depth.

Aroma: 4.5/5
The nose is a treat for dessert lovers. You immediately get hit with sweet vanilla, which blends beautifully with the malty, roasted backbone of the beer. There’s also a hint of chocolate and caramel, adding a bit of complexity. The vanilla is definitely the star here, but it’s not overpowering. It just gives you that cozy, welcoming scent.

Taste: 4/5
When it comes to taste, the Vanilla Porter really shines. The first sip gives you a smooth wave of vanilla sweetness followed by the roasted malt flavors you expect from a porter. The vanilla doesn’t smack you in the face. It’s more of a gentle complement to the chocolate and coffee notes. There’s a mild bitterness from the hops, just enough to balance the sweetness.

If I had to nitpick, I’d say it leans a little more on the sweet side than some traditional porters. This makes it super approachable for people who aren’t usually into darker beers, but for those who prefer a stronger roasted flavor or a drier finish, it might feel a tad too sweet.

Mouthfeel: 3.5/5
The body is medium, which is lighter than you might expect for a porter. It’s not too thick or syrupy, so it doesn’t sit heavy in your stomach. That makes it easier to drink more than one, but I do wish it had just a little more body to really round out the roasted malt. The carbonation is just right…not too fizzy, but not flat either.

Overall: 4/5
Breckenridge Vanilla Porter is a solid, easy to drink porter with a sweet twist. The vanilla is a great addition, adding some intrigue without taking away from the classic roasted malt foundation. It’s definitely on the sweeter side of the porter spectrum, which makes it a nice introduction to the style for newcomers but might leave hardcore porter fans wanting something a little more robust.

Would I Drink It Again? Absolutely. It’s a great go-to when you want something a little special, and it pairs really well with dessert or just on its own for a relaxing evening. But if I’m in the mood for a more traditional porter with that deep roasted bitterness, I might look elsewhere.

Rating: 4/5 – A flavorful, approachable porter with a delightful vanilla kick, though a touch more body and less sweetness would make it even better.
