Cinder Block Brewery Review – North Kansas City, MO

by Leave a Comment

If you’re looking for a laid-back brewery with a solid beer lineup, Cinder Block Brewery in North Kansas City is definitely worth checking out. Nestled in an industrial part of town, it has this cool, unpretentious vibe that feels very “Kansas City.” The brewery is tucked away from the hustle and bustle, but it’s not hard to find—and once you’re there, it’s like stepping into a local gem.

Beer Selection
Cinder Block shines in the variety and quality of its beers. Whether you’re into classic styles or prefer something a little more adventurous, they’ve got you covered. The Northtown Native, a pre-Prohibition style lager, is an absolute staple…crisp, light, and perfect for when you want something easy-drinking. Then there’s the Block IPA, which balances bitterness with a citrusy, piney punch. For something a bit more unique, their Weathered Wit is a Belgian-style wheat beer with orange and coriander, and it’s refreshing without being overly sweet. The Czech Dark Lager is a solid take on a traditional European style, with a few twists that make it stand out. Also, don’t miss out on their Juicy Pils, which is a refreshing, hop-forward beer that blends the crispness of a pilsner with the juicy qualities often found in IPAs.

Their rotating seasonal beers are also a highlight…whether it’s a barrel aged stout or a fruited sour, there’s usually something that surprises regulars. The only downside is that their experimental or seasonal beers can go fast. So if you hear about a special release, get there quick!

Atmosphere
The brewery’s atmosphere is relaxed, with a kind of “come-as-you-are” charm. The space itself feels cozy and industrial, with exposed brick and high ceilings. You’ve got a choice between sitting inside where the bar and fermenters are in view, or heading out to their beer garden, which is a great spot when the weather’s nice. On weekends, it can get crowded, but that’s just a sign of its popularity with locals.

One thing to note is that Cinder Block doesn’t have a kitchen, but they frequently host food trucks, so you won’t go hungry. There’s something about pairing one of their IPAs with some tacos from a nearby truck that just works. If food trucks aren’t your thing, there are plenty of local spots nearby for a bite.

Prices
In terms of pricing, Cinder Block is pretty reasonable for a craft brewery. Pints typically run around $6-7, and flights are available if you want to sample a few different styles without committing to a full pour. Plus, they offer growlers and crowlers to-go if you want to take some of that goodness home. Some of the barrel-aged and special releases can get pricier, but that’s expected for those styles.

Location
Cinder Block’s location in North Kansas City might feel a little out of the way if you’re not familiar with the area, but it’s actually pretty convenient once you get there. It’s close to downtown and has ample parking, which is a nice bonus considering a lot of other breweries in the KC area can be a hassle to park at. If you’re up for a mini brewery tour, it’s also close to some other craft spots like Callsign Brewing, Big Rip, and Outlaw, so you can easily make a day of it.

The Bottom Line
All in all, Cinder Block Brewery is a fantastic stop for anyone who loves craft beer. They’ve got a great variety of beers, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the prices won’t break the bank. Sure, it would be nice if they had a kitchen of their own, and sometimes the special releases disappear a little too quickly, but those are small nitpicks in the grand scheme of things. If you’re in the North Kansas City area, this is one brewery you don’t want to miss.
