Cinder Block Brewing Juicy Pils Review

by Leave a Comment

If you’re a fan of pilsners but crave something a little different, Cinder Block Brewing’s Juicy Pils offers a unique twist on this classic style. It’s a refreshing, hop-forward beer that blends the crispness of a pilsner with the juicy qualities often found in IPAs. It’s not your typical pilsner, but it’s a fun departure from the norm.

First Impressions
When you crack open a can of Juicy Pils, the aroma immediately grabs your attention. You get a vibrant burst of citrus (think orange zest and grapefruit) mixed with a touch of tropical fruit, which is unexpected for a pilsner. The color pours a light golden straw, with a nice white, foamy head that sticks around just long enough to remind you it’s there. It’s inviting, for sure.

Tasting Notes
On the first sip, you’re greeted with a bright and crisp profile that you’d expect from a good pilsner. But right after, the juicy hop character comes through, with flavors like tangerine, pineapple, and even a little bit of mango. It’s balanced with a subtle malt backbone that gives it a light breadiness, preventing the hops from taking over entirely.

What really stands out here is the beer’s clean finish. It’s refreshing, with just a slight bitterness lingering at the end, but it doesn’t overwhelm the palate. The mouthfeel is smooth and light, making this an easy drinker at 5.2% ABV…a perfect beer for those warm afternoons or after mowing the lawn.

Positives

  • Unique Flavor Combo: It nails the balance between a traditional pilsner’s crispness and the juicy, tropical flavors of a more hop-forward brew. You get the best of both worlds without sacrificing drinkability.
  • Great for Hopheads & Pilsner Fans: If you’re someone who enjoys IPAs but wants something lighter, Juicy Pils is a solid middle ground. It’s approachable for those who might not always go for highly bitter beers.
  • Super Refreshing: That light, easy finish makes it an ideal choice for summer or any time you’re craving something both flavorful and refreshing.

Negatives

  • Not for Pilsner Purists: If you’re a die-hard pilsner fan expecting a straight-up classic version, you might find the juicy, tropical hop character a bit too much. It leans more into IPA territory at times, which could be off-putting if you’re not into fruity hops.
  • Slightly Lacking in Complexity: While it’s delicious, it’s not the most complex beer out there. It’s highly drinkable, but after a few sips, the flavors can start to feel a bit predictable.

Overall Rating: 4/5
Cinder Block’s Juicy Pils is a delightful twist on the traditional pilsner, with enough hop character to keep IPA lovers happy without losing the refreshing qualities that make a pilsner great. It’s not for everyone, especially if you’re a purist, but if you’re open to something a little different, this is a solid choice to add to your rotation.
