Craft Beer Review: Goose Island Sofie

by Leave a Comment

Alright, let’s talk about Goose Island (Chicago, Illinois) Sofie, a farmhouse ale that’s as classy as it sounds but still approachable for us casual beer lovers. Sofie is a Belgian-style saison, and Goose Island has given it a fun twist by aging it in wine barrels with orange peel. It’s the kind of beer that makes you want to throw on a sunhat and enjoy a lazy afternoon outdoors. But hey, it’s not without its quirks.

First Impressions
From the moment you pour Sofie, it’s a looker. The pale, golden color practically glows in the glass, topped with a delicate, fluffy white head that sticks around. It’s the kind of beer that makes you pause and think, “Yeah, I’m about to drink something special.”

The aromas are floral and citrusy, with hints of lemon zest, orange, and maybe even a little white grape from that wine barrel aging. There’s a whisper of funk…a nod to its farmhouse roots, but nothing too barnyard-y, so don’t let that scare you off.

Tasting Notes
Sofie’s flavor profile is where it really shines. It starts off with a bright citrus pop, thanks to the orange peel, followed by a slightly tart, vinous character from the barrel aging. You’ll pick up notes of green apple, pear, and a subtle spice…think black pepper or clove, but very faint.

The carbonation is lively, almost champagne-like, which keeps it light and refreshing. The finish is crisp and dry, with a gentle lingering tang that reminds you this isn’t just your average saison.

What I Loved

  • The Balance: It manages to be complex without being overwhelming. The citrus, spice, and barrel notes all work together beautifully.
  • Drinkability: At 6.5% ABV, it’s not a lightweight, but it feels light on the palate, making it an excellent choice for warm weather sipping or pairing with food.
  • Creative Twist: The wine barrel aging and orange peel add just enough uniqueness to make it stand out in a sea of saisons.

What Could Be Better

  • Subtle Funkiness: If you’re looking for a saison with a bold, earthy funk, Sofie might feel a little too clean and polished. It’s farmhouse-lite, so to speak.
  • Price Point: Depending on where you’re buying, it might feel a tad expensive for what it is. Don’t get me wrong…it’s tasty, but it’s not necessarily a budget-friendly option.
  • Carbonation Overload: While the effervescence is fun, some sips feel like they’re more bubbles than beer. If you’re sensitive to overly fizzy drinks, it might bug you.

The Verdict
Sofie is a delightful, well-crafted beer that brings a little elegance to the saison style without losing its charm. It’s perfect for wine lovers dipping their toes into craft beer or anyone looking for something bright and refreshing with a touch of complexity.

Rating: 4.2/5
Would I drink it again? Absolutely. Would I keep a stash of it in my fridge at all times? Maybe not, but it’s definitely one I’d grab for a special occasion or when I’m feeling fancy.

If you’re into Belgian-inspired beers with a modern twist, Sofie deserves a spot on your must-try list.
