Firestone Walker Hopnosis IPA Review

by Leave a Comment

Rating: 4.5/5

Firestone Walker’s Hopnosis IPA is a standout in the world of West Coast-style IPAs, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a perfect blend of modern hop-forward flavors with a smooth, drinkable finish that’ll make you want to crack open another can. But, like any beer, it’s not without a couple of minor downsides.

First Impressions
Right off the bat, you’re greeted with a beautiful, golden pour that’s crystal clear with just the right amount of frothy white head. It looks inviting, like a quintessential IPA, and the aroma confirms that suspicion immediately. Bursts of tropical fruits hit your nose first—pineapple, mango, and a bit of peach—but what really sets it apart is that subtle pine and resinous character underneath. This is an IPA lover’s dream.

Tasting Notes
Hopnosis leans heavily into the new-school IPA territory, and it shows. The mouthfeel is incredibly smooth—almost too smooth for how hop-forward it is. You get an initial rush of tropical flavors: ripe mango, citrus zest, and a bit of stone fruit. That tropical sweetness is balanced nicely by a mild piney bitterness that cuts through without overwhelming your palate.

The hops shine here, no doubt, thanks to their Cryo Hops® technique, which concentrates hop flavor and aroma. It’s a cool innovation that results in a juicy, vibrant taste without too much bitterness. The finish is crisp and dry, but not astringent—just enough to keep you wanting more. And at 6.7% ABV, it’s strong enough to give you a buzz, but not so overpowering that you’ll be knocked out after a couple of pints.

What’s to Love

  • Hop-forward, but balanced: The tropical fruit flavors are front and center, but that classic West Coast IPA bitterness still makes an appearance.
  • Smooth and drinkable: Despite its hop intensity, it’s dangerously smooth and easy to drink. You could easily have two or three without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Innovative hop technique: Cryo Hops® give it a vibrant, intense hop aroma and flavor without the harsh bitterness that can sometimes come with West Coast IPAs.

What Could Be Better

  • Maybe too smooth?: For die-hard fans of bitter IPAs, Hopnosis might feel a little too easygoing. The bitterness is subtle, so if you’re chasing that mouth-puckering hop kick, you might find it lacking.
  • A touch one-dimensional: While it’s packed with tropical and piney goodness, some may argue that the malt character is a bit underdeveloped. If you’re looking for a more complex backbone, this beer stays pretty hop-focused.

Overall Thoughts
Firestone Walker’s Hopnosis IPA is a deliciously modern take on a West Coast IPA. It’s the kind of beer that’s bursting with flavor but still stays highly drinkable, making it an easy choice for IPA fans and craft beer newbies alike. While it might not hit the mark for those craving a hard-hitting, ultra-bitter experience, it nails the balance between bold hop flavors and smooth drinkability.

Definitely worth picking up a six-pack—just be warned, it’s easy to finish more than you planned!
