Founders Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale: A Bold Brew Worth Sipping Slowly

by Leave a Comment

If you’re in the mood for a beer with some serious character, Founders (Grand Rapids, Michigan) Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale delivers a ride that’s both smooth and rebellious. This isn’t your run of the mill ale. It’s rich, unapologetic, and brimming with personality. Here’s my take on it.

Tasting Notes

Founders Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale

The pour immediately sets the tone: a deep ruby-brown hue with a creamy tan head that sticks around just enough to make an impression. Right from the first sniff, your nose gets hit with malty goodness (think caramel, toffee, and a hint of dark fruit, like raisins or dates). There’s also a subtle whiff of smoke, which teases you about what’s to come.

On the palate, it’s an absolute malt bomb (in the best way). Sweet caramel and toffee dominate the front, but they’re quickly balanced by a touch of roasted malt and just the faintest earthy bitterness. The Scotch Ale influence shines through with those smoky undertones and a slightly boozy warmth that reminds you this is an 8.5% ABV heavyweight. The finish is smooth and lingering, with a touch of sweetness and a hint of spice that leaves you wanting another sip.

What really stands out is how well balanced it all feels. Even though it’s bold and packed with flavor, nothing overwhelms the palate. It’s like a perfectly tuned malt symphony.

What’s to Love?

  • Flavor Complexity: The layers of malt, caramel, dark fruit, and smoke create a complex, satisfying experience. This isn’t a beer you rush, it’s one to savor.
  • Mouthfeel: It’s medium-bodied with a velvety smoothness that coats the tongue without feeling too heavy.
  • Balance: Despite its bold flavors and high ABV, it’s remarkably drinkable. The sweetness doesn’t overpower, and the smoky bitterness cuts through just enough.

Where It Could Improve

If I’m being picky, the smoky character might not be everyone’s cup of tea (or pint of ale). It’s subtle but noticeable, so if you’re not into a hint of peat, this might not be your jam. Also, while the booziness is part of its charm, it can feel a little hot on the finish if you’re not a fan of warming ales.

Overall Rating

Appearance: 9/10
Aroma: 8.5/10
Taste: 9/10

Drinkability: 8/10

Final Thoughts

Founders Dirty Bastard is the kind of beer you pour when you want to sit back, relax, and really enjoy the experience. It’s not trying to be trendy or light. It’s a hearty, unapologetically bold Scotch Ale that knows exactly what it’s doing. Whether you’re pairing it with a hearty meal or just sipping it on a cold night, this beer delivers. Give it a try if you’re into big, malty brews with a little attitude.
