Great Divide Hibernation Ale: A Winter Warmer Worth Hibernating With

by Leave a Comment

When the weather turns cold, there’s nothing quite like a beer that feels like a cozy sweater for your taste buds. Great Divide’s Hibernation Ale has long been a go-to for those who appreciate rich, robust winter beers. It’s got a lot going for it, but like any brew, it’s not without its quirks.

First Impressions
This English style old ale pours a deep mahogany brown with ruby highlights when held to the light. The head is a creamy tan and lingers for a bit, leaving nice lacing on the glass. Right from the pour, the aroma wafts up with notes of molasses, dark fruits like raisins and figs, and a subtle nuttiness. There’s also a hint of earthy hops and spice, giving it a slightly festive vibe.

Rating for appearance and aroma: 9/10

Tasting Notes
The flavor is where Hibernation Ale truly shines. The malt character is bold and complex…caramel, toffee, and a touch of brown sugar create a sweet, warming backbone. As the beer warms up, you start to pick out layers of dried fruit, roasted nuts, and just a whisper of chocolate.

The hops play a supporting role here, but they’re far from shy. The earthy bitterness provides a firm balance to the malt sweetness, preventing the beer from feeling cloying. There’s also a slight piney note that nods to the beer’s Colorado origins.

The mouthfeel is smooth and slightly velvety, with a medium to full body. At 8.7% ABV, it definitely has some heft, and you can feel a bit of alcohol warmth as you sip…like a friendly nudge reminding you this is a winter warmer, not a session beer.

Rating for flavor and body: 9.5/10

Positives

  • Rich and Layered: Every sip reveals new flavors, making this a beer you’ll want to savor slowly.
  • Perfect for the Season: It captures that cozy, fireside vibe you want in a winter ale.
  • Balanced Sweetness: The maltiness is rich but never overwhelming, thanks to the hops cutting through.

Negatives

  • Alcohol Warmth: While it’s not overpowering, the booze does peek through more than some might like.
  • Not Everyday Friendly: This is a heavy, complex beer, so it’s not the kind of thing you’d casually drink during a game night or barbecue.

Final Verdict
Great Divide’s Hibernation Ale is a top tier winter warmer with depth, balance, and just the right amount of festive charm. It’s the kind of beer you want to enjoy slowly, preferably by a roaring fire with some good company. While it might be a bit much for casual drinkers or those who shy away from boozy ales, it’s a fantastic option for anyone who loves rich, malty beers with a touch of seasonal spirit.

Overall Rating: 9/10

Would I stock up on this for the winter? Absolutely. It’s a fantastic beer for slow sipping and savoring those chilly evenings. Just don’t expect it to be an everyday companion. It’s a special beer for special moments.
