New Belgium Blaze Lightning IPA Review

by Leave a Comment

New Belgium Brewing, a pioneer in the craft beer scene brings us Blaze Lightning IPA, a hazy India Pale Ale that aims to strike a balance between bold hop flavors and approachable drinkability. As a fan of New Belgium’s creative approach to brewing, I was eager to see how this offering stacks up in the crowded IPA market.

Appearance – 8/10

Blaze Lightning pours a cloudy, golden-orange hue with a frothy white head that lingers nicely. The haze is on point for the style, and the beer has a vibrant, inviting look that promises a juicy experience.

New Belgium Blaze Lightning IPA

Aroma – 8/10

The nose is a burst of tropical and citrus notes, with mango, pineapple, and tangerine taking center stage. There’s a subtle floral undertone and a touch of pine, but the aroma leans heavily into the fruit-forward side of the IPA spectrum. It’s bright and inviting, though perhaps a touch one dimensional for those seeking more complexity.

Flavor – 7/10

On the palate, Blaze Lightning delivers a wave of juicy fruit flavors, mirroring the aroma with prominent mango, orange, and a hint of grapefruit. The malt backbone is light and slightly sweet, providing just enough support to let the hops shine. However, the bitterness is restrained, which may disappoint hop heads looking for a more assertive bite. The finish is clean and slightly dry, making it easy to sip, but it lacks the depth and lingering hop character that might elevate it to greatness.

Mouthfeel – 8/10

The mouthfeel is smooth and medium-bodied, with a creamy texture that complements the hazy style. Carbonation is moderate, adding a refreshing crispness without being overly fizzy. It’s a well executed texture that enhances the overall drinking experience.

Overall – 7.5/10

Blaze Lightning IPA is a solid entry in the hazy IPA category, offering a juicy, approachable profile that’s perfect for casual drinkers or those new to the style. While it may not wow seasoned IPA enthusiasts with its complexity or boldness, it’s a reliable and enjoyable beer that showcases New Belgium’s skill in crafting balanced, drinkable brews.

If you’ve tried New Belgium’s Blaze Lightning IPA, please share your thoughts about it in the comments section below.
