New Belgium Electric ThunderClap IPA Review

by Leave a Comment

If you’re a fan of bold, electrifying IPAs, New Belgium’s Electric ThunderClap IPA is worth trying. This brew brings the energy with a hop-forward punch that doesn’t hold back, but it also offers enough balance to keep you coming back for more. Here’s my take:

First Impressions

Pouring it into a glass, you’re greeted with a glowing golden hue that’s slightly hazy, topped with a frothy, white head that lingers. The aroma jumps out right away in waves of tropical fruit, citrus zest, and pine mingle with a subtle malt sweetness. It’s inviting without being overpowering, setting the stage for a big flavor experience.

Tasting Notes

New Belgium Electric ThunderClap IPA
  • Hops: This IPA delivers on its promise of bold hop character. You get a solid mix of tropical mango, juicy pineapple, and bright orange peel, balanced by dank, resinous pine. The hop bitterness is noticeable but not aggressive. It’s enough to satisfy IPA fans without over powering your palate.
  • Malt: The malt base plays a supportive role here, offering a slightly bready, caramel-like sweetness that smooths out the edges and prevents the bitterness from taking over. It’s well executed and doesn’t feel heavy.
  • Finish: The finish is crisp and dry, with a lingering bitterness that leaves a zesty grapefruit note on the tongue. It’s the kind of finish that makes you want to take another sip to chase the flavors.

Balance & Drinkability

Electric ThunderClap IPA rides the line between being bold and approachable. At 7.5% ABV, it’s strong enough to pack a punch but doesn’t feel overly boozy. It’s the kind of beer you could enjoy solo while unwinding after work or pair with spicy wings, grilled seafood, or sharp cheddar for a killer flavor combo.

Critiques

If I had to nitpick, I’d say the bitterness might be a touch intense for anyone new to IPAs or those who prefer something a bit softer. Additionally, while the tropical and citrus flavors shine, the piney notes might feel a little too resinous for some, especially if you’re not into that West Coast vibe. But for hop heads? It’s probably just right.
