New Belgium Voodoo Ranger Imperial IPA Review

by Leave a Comment

When it comes to bold and flavorful IPAs, New Belgium’s Voodoo Ranger Imperial IPA is a serious contender. It’s a beer that doesn’t shy away from big hops, big ABV (9%), and an even bigger attitude. After cracking one open, it doesn’t take long to realize why this has become a staple for IPA lovers.

Appearance:
Pouring a deep golden amber with a slight haze, the Voodoo Ranger sits beautifully in the glass. Its thick, foamy head has great retention, leaving some lacing as you sip. It’s visually inviting, and you know right away you’re in for a robust experience. Rating: 4.5/5

Aroma:
From the first sniff, the hops come rushing in—huge waves of pine, citrus, and tropical fruits like pineapple and mango. There’s also a hint of malt sweetness in the background, balancing the bold hop aroma. It’s definitely on the pungent side, but in a good way if you’re a fan of hop-forward beers. Rating: 4.5/5

Taste:
The first sip hits you with a powerful punch of hop bitterness, but it’s not overwhelming. There’s a nice balance between the resinous pine and juicy tropical fruit flavors. Grapefruit, orange zest, and a bit of melon peek through as well. Underneath all the hop intensity, there’s a solid malt backbone providing some caramel sweetness, which rounds things out nicely.

That said, the alcohol warmth is noticeable but not overly boozy. It’s strong, but not in a way that detracts from the experience—it complements the flavors. However, if you’re sensitive to bitter or high ABV beers, it might be a bit much for some. Rating: 4.2/5

Mouthfeel:
Smooth and slightly creamy, the medium body gives it just enough weight to be satisfying without feeling too heavy. It has a pleasant carbonation level that enhances the hop bite, but it’s not overly fizzy. Overall, it’s a well-rounded drinking experience. Rating: 4/5

Finish:
The finish is dry and clean, with lingering bitterness that hangs around a bit longer than you might expect. The hoppy flavors stick around, which is great if you’re a hophead, but can become a touch astringent after a few sips. That bitterness, while delightful at first, may be a little too persistent for some drinkers. Rating: 3.8/5

Overall Thoughts:
The Voodoo Ranger Imperial IPA is a bold, flavorful beer that delivers exactly what you’d expect from a high ABV, hop-forward imperial IPA. It’s perfect for those who love big, bitter flavors and aren’t afraid of a bit of alcohol warmth. The tropical and piney hop character is balanced well with malt sweetness, making it approachable for fans of the style.

On the flip side, the intensity might be a bit much for more casual drinkers, and the lingering bitterness can feel a bit sharp toward the end of the glass. But if you’re a hop lover who enjoys bold beers, this is absolutely one to have on your radar.

Final Rating: 4.3/5

Would I drink it again? Absolutely. But I’d probably recommend this as a beer to enjoy slowly and appreciate rather than something you’d reach for if you’re after an easygoing, sessionable IPA.
