New Belgium Voodoo Ranger IPA Review

by Leave a Comment

If you’re a fan of IPAs, chances are you’ve crossed paths with Voodoo Ranger IPA from New Belgium Brewing. This beer has earned its place as a staple in the craft beer world, and it’s not hard to see why. With its bold flavors, lively hop profile, and just the right amount of bitterness, this IPA delivers a solid experience for both hopheads and casual drinkers alike. Let’s break it down.

First Impressions

The branding on this beer is unmistakable. Voodoo Ranger’s skeletal mascot has become an icon. It’s fun, quirky, and hints at the lively experience waiting inside the bottle or can. As soon as you pour it, the beer reveals a clear, golden-amber hue topped with a fluffy white head. It’s an inviting sight that screams “classic IPA.”

New Belgium Voodoo Ranger IPA

Aroma: 4.5/5

The nose is a delightful mix of tropical fruits, citrus, and piney hops. You’ll pick up notes of mango, pineapple, and maybe even a little orange zest, all backed by that unmistakable dankness that a good IPA should have. It smells fresh, vibrant, and promises a big flavor payoff.

Flavor: 4/5

On the first sip, you’re hit with a wave of juicy, tropical sweetness, quickly followed by a crisp, assertive bitterness. The hops take center stage, delivering flavors of grapefruit, pine resin, and a touch of floral earthiness. There’s a nice malty backbone here as well, with hints of caramel and biscuit that balance out the hops without overpowering them.

The bitterness (coming in at 50 IBUs) is noticeable but not overwhelming, making this a good “gateway IPA” for someone new to the style. At 7% ABV, it’s got a bit of a kick but remains smooth and easy to drink. It’s definitely a beer you could have a couple of without feeling overwhelmed by the flavor or alcohol.

Mouthfeel: 4.5/5

The carbonation is spot on…crisp but not too sharp. It’s got a medium body that feels satisfying but never heavy, making it refreshing and drinkable. There’s a nice lingering bitterness on the finish that encourages you to take another sip.

Overall Experience

What sets Voodoo Ranger IPA apart is its approachability. It’s bold and flavorful enough to please seasoned IPA fans, yet balanced and smooth enough for someone who might not typically gravitate toward hoppy beers. The tropical notes keep things bright and lively, while the piney bitterness gives it that classic IPA character.

The Downsides

If you’re looking for something super unique or boundary pushing, Voodoo Ranger IPA might not blow your mind. It leans toward the more mainstream side of craft beer, which makes sense given New Belgium’s wide distribution. For die hard IPA purists who crave bitterness levels off the charts or experimental hop combinations, this might come across as a little too safe.

Final Rating: 4.25/5

New Belgium’s Voodoo Ranger IPA is an excellent example of why the IPA style remains so popular. It’s well balanced, flavorful, and endlessly drinkable, with just enough character to keep things interesting without going overboard. Whether you’re new to IPAs or a seasoned craft beer fan, it’s worth keeping a few of these in your fridge.
