Review of Boulevard Irish Ale

by Leave a Comment

Boulevard Brewing Co.’s Irish Ale is like a warm welcome to a classic pub, bringing traditional Irish style with a bit of an American twist. I gave this one a spin recently, and it was a satisfying, well-rounded experience that’s worth sharing. Let’s dive in!

First Impressions

Pouring this beer is a treat for the eyes. It’s a vibrant amber-red with crystal-clear clarity and a creamy off-white head that sticks around for a bit before fading into a nice lacing on the glass. Right away, it feels inviting, like it’s calling you to settle in for a cozy pint.

Aroma

The nose is light but pleasant, offering notes of toasty malt, caramel, and just a hint of bread crust. There’s a faint floral hop presence that balances things out, but it’s subtle. You might have to go searching for it, which could be a plus or minus depending on how bold you like your beer aromas.

Taste and Mouthfeel

Here’s where this ale shines. The flavor is malt-forward, which you’d expect from an Irish red, but it doesn’t feel overly sweet or cloying. You’ll pick up rich toffee and caramel flavors, complemented by a slight nuttiness. The hops are low-key, offering just a whisper of earthiness and spice to keep the sweetness in check.

The finish is smooth and slightly dry, with a lingering malt presence that makes you want another sip. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation, giving it a nice balance between creamy and crisp. It’s sessionable and easy-drinking, which is both a strength and, for some, a bit of a drawback…it might not wow you with complexity, but it’s undeniably pleasant.

What I Loved

Approachable flavor: This beer is incredibly drinkable. It’s not overly bitter, and the malt flavors are rich without being overpowering.
Great balance: The slight hop bitterness keeps the malt from dominating completely, making it a well-rounded option.
Appearance: That red-amber glow is just gorgeous! This one definitely wins points for presentation.

A Few Critiques

Aroma could be more pronounced: While the subtle nose works for some, I found myself wishing for a bit more intensity to match the lovely flavors.
A bit safe: Boulevard Irish Ale nails the traditional style, but it doesn’t stray too far from the playbook. If you’re a fan of more experimental beers, you might find it a bit predictable.

Rating: 7.8/10

This is a solid Irish ale that stays true to its roots while offering a clean, drinkable experience. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s the kind of beer you’d happily enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day, or any day, really. Boulevard Irish Ale is a crowd-pleaser that’s worth keeping in your rotation, especially if you’re a fan of malt-forward brews.
