Review of Cinder Block Brewing’s Block IPA

by Leave a Comment

Cinder Block Brewing’s Block IPA is a solid entry in the craft beer world, balancing bold flavors with a drinkability that makes it approachable for IPA newcomers while still satisfying seasoned hopheads. Here’s my take on this Kansas City creation.

First Impressions

Pouring into the glass, the beer greets you with a warm, golden-amber hue, crowned by a fluffy, off-white head that lingers nicely. Right away, the aroma pops with a bouquet of citrus (think grapefruit zest and orange peel) layered over a subtle piney backbone. There’s also a whisper of malt sweetness if you take the time to really inhale. It’s inviting and promises a flavor-packed sip.

Tasting Notes

Block IPA review

The first sip doesn’t disappoint. That citrus-forward aroma translates beautifully onto the palate, with notes of juicy orange, lemon rind, and a hint of tropical fruit…maybe mango or pineapple. The hops bring a clean bitterness that’s prominent without being aggressive, making each sip crisp and refreshing.

As you delve deeper, a toasty, slightly caramel-like malt character shows up to balance the hops, preventing the bitterness from taking over. The finish is dry and mildly resinous, with a lingering bitterness that hangs out just long enough to remind you it’s an IPA, but it doesn’t wear out its welcome.

The Good

Block IPA’s standout quality is its balance. It’s hop-forward, as any good IPA should be, but it avoids the over the top bitterness that can scare off some drinkers. The citrus and pine flavors are vibrant and fresh, making this a beer you could enjoy on a sunny patio or alongside a hearty burger. The moderate 7.2% ABV hits a nice sweet spot. It’s enough to feel substantial without knocking you over after one glass.

The Not So Good

If there’s a downside, it’s that Block IPA plays it a little safe. While it’s expertly brewed and highly drinkable, it doesn’t push boundaries or bring anything particularly unique to the table. Hardcore hop lovers might find it lacking the aggressive punch or innovative flavors they crave. Additionally, the malt profile, while balanced, is a touch forgettable. It does its job well but doesn’t stand out.

Final Thoughts

Cinder Block Brewing’s Block IPA is the kind of beer that’s easy to like. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, but it delivers a dependable, well-crafted experience that showcases the best parts of an IPA without overwhelming the palate. Whether you’re a seasoned craft beer enthusiast or someone just getting into the IPA world, this one is worth a try.

Would I order another pint? Absolutely, but if I’m feeling adventurous, I might go searching for something with a bit more edge.
