Review of Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale

by Leave a Comment

When it comes to bold, unapologetic beers, Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale practically wrote the playbook. This iconic brew from Stone Brewing doesn’t shy away from its personality. Right from the name to the flavor profile, it’s designed to challenge your taste buds. Here’s my take on this legendary ale.

First Impressions

Pouring this beer is an experience in itself. The deep amber hue sits beautifully in the glass, topped with a thick, frothy tan head that sticks around like it’s got nowhere else to be. The aromas hit you right away…big, malty notes with a blend of caramel sweetness, toasty bread, and a smack of piney, resinous hops. There’s also a whiff of something almost floral, but don’t be fooled, this beer is more about power than subtlety.

Tasting Notes

The first sip is a roller coaster. It starts with a wave of rich maltiness (think caramel and toasted nuts) but before you can get too comfortable, the hops come in swinging. That aggressive bitterness is a hallmark of Arrogant Bastard, with flavors of grapefruit rind, pine sap, and even a bit of herbal spice. It’s complex, layered, and definitely not for the faint of heart.

As the beer warms, more nuances come through. There’s a slight dark fruit undertone, like dried cherries or raisins, adding a touch of sweetness to balance the bold bitterness. The mouthfeel is smooth and almost creamy, with a medium-full body and just the right amount of carbonation to keep things lively.

The Good

Bold and Unique: Arrogant Bastard lives up to its name. It’s not trying to be like any other ale out there, and that confidence is refreshing (pun intended).
Complex Flavor Profile: From sweet malts to punchy hops and everything in between, this beer keeps your palate guessing.
Great Pairing Potential: This ale stands up to big flavors…grilled meats, aged cheeses, or even a hearty bowl of chili would make excellent companions.

The Not So Great

Bitterness Overload?: For some drinkers, the aggressive bitterness might be too much. If you’re not into hoppy beers, this one could feel like a slap in the face.
Not a Crowd Pleaser: This is a love it or hate it beer. If you’re sharing with friends, you might want to have some lighter options on hand for those who find it overwhelming.

Final Thoughts and Rating

Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale is a statement beer. It’s the kind of brew that makes you sit up, pay attention, and maybe even question your palate. Sure, it’s not the easiest drinker, but it’s not trying to be. If you’re into big, bold, and bitter beers that lean heavily into the West Coast style, this is one to try.

That said, it’s not without its quirks. The bitterness could be dialed back just a touch to let the malt complexity shine a bit more. But hey, that’s nitpicking. This beer is meant to challenge you, and in that mission, it succeeds.

Rating:
Appearance: 9/10

If you’re a craft beer fan who loves bold flavors and isn’t afraid of a little attitude in your glass, give Arrogant Bastard a shot. Just remember: “You’re not worthy”…or so they say!
