Brewery: Schlafly Beer (St. Louis, Missouri)
Style: American IPA
ABV: 7.2%
IBU: 65

Schlafly American IPA is a take on the classic hop-forward style, crafted by one of St. Louis’ most respected independent breweries. Schlafly Beer has been producing quality craft beer since 1991 and has developed a reputation for tasty and approachable brews. Their American IPA is no exception, blending bold hop character with a malt backbone that makes it highly drinkable.

Schlafly Beer American IPA

Appearance (4.1/5)
The beer pours a slightly hazy golden-amber hue with a thick, frothy white head that leaves a nice lacing on the glass. It has a great presentation, and the moderate haze suggests a more modern approach to the IPA style while still maintaining a traditional look.

Aroma (3.9/5)
The nose is inviting, with a blend of citrus and pine from the hops, complemented by light floral and tropical fruit notes. Grapefruit, orange zest, and a hint of pine resin are at the forefront, while a subtle caramel malt presence rounds out the aroma.

Taste (4.1/5)
On the palate, Schlafly American IPA offers a balanced mix of hop bitterness and malt sweetness. Bright citrus flavors, such as grapefruit and orange dominate the initial sip, followed by earthy and piney undertones. Unlike some aggressively bitter IPAs, this one keeps things approachable and more balanced. The malt backbone provides a toasty sweetness that complements the hops rather than overpowering them.

Mouthfeel (3.9/5)
Medium bodied with a smooth, slightly creamy texture, this IPA has a crisp and refreshing finish. The carbonation level is moderate, providing a pleasant effervescence without being too sharp. The finish is dry with lingering citrus bitterness, making it a satisfying but not overwhelming experience.

Drinkability & Overall Impression (4/5)

As one of the largest independently owned breweries in the Midwest, Schlafly Beer has maintained their dedication to using high quality ingredients, while expanding its reach. Their American IPA reflects this commitment to quality and consistency.

Schlafly American IPA is a solid example of the style, showcasing a thoughtful balance of hops and malt. It doesn’t try to be the boldest or most extreme IPA on the market but instead focuses on being an accessible, flavorful, and highly drinkable option. At 7.2% ABV, it’s strong enough to be satisfying without feeling too heavy.
