Modus Hoperandi was first released in 2008, and it helped put Ska Brewing on the craft beer map. The can’s comic book style artwork hints at the brewery’s offbeat, irreverent vibe…a theme that runs through much of Ska’s branding. Founded in 1995, Ska Brewing blends a DIY punk ethos with solid brewing chops, and Modus Hoperandi is one of its flagship beers.

Pour & Aroma
It pours a clear amber-copper with a foamy off-white head that holds up well. On the nose, it’s a punch of classic American hops…pine, citrus peel, and a bit of resin, balanced by a touch of caramel malt sweetness. You’re not getting any tropical haze vibes here. This is more of a throwback West Coast-style IPA, even though it comes from the Rockies.
Taste
The flavor is bold but well structured. You get bright grapefruit and orange rind up front, followed by dank pine and earthy hop bitterness. There’s a noticeable malt backbone with some toasted caramel and light biscuit that keeps it from being too aggressive. The finish is crisp, dry, and lingering, with a bitterness that sticks around but doesn’t overwhelm.
Mouthfeel
Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It’s smooth for an IPA, with just enough bite to keep it interesting. At 6.8% ABV, it’s strong enough to feel substantial but not so boozy that it tips into palate wrecker territory.
Overall Impressions
Modus Hoperandi is a solid, no nonsense IPA that sticks to its roots. It doesn’t chase trends, and that’s part of its charm. While it might feel a little dated to fans of juicy, hazy NEIPAs, for hop traditionalists, it hits the mark. Pairs well with spicy foods, grilled meats, or sharp cheeses.

If you’re into old school hop bombs with a piney bite and a solid malt base, Modus Hoperandi is worth revisiting…or discovering if you missed it the first time around. It’s not the flashiest IPA on the shelf, but it’s one that’s stood the test of time for a reason.
