Stockyard Brewing Black IPA Review

by

When it comes to bold and unique craft beers, Stockyard Brewing’s Black IPA is a real contender. It’s not just your average IPA with a fancy name, this brew has character. Let’s dive into what makes it a standout, with a few bumps along the way.

First Impressions

Pouring it into the glass, this beer is a beauty. The deep, almost opaque black color is capped with a thick tan head that lingers. Right off the bat, the aroma hits you with roasted malts, piney hops, and just a hint of dark chocolate. It’s inviting and promises complexity.

Tasting Notes

Stockyards Brewing Black IPA review

The first sip is an explosion of flavor. There’s a dance between the roasted malts and hop bitterness that’s nothing short of delightful. Think dark coffee, a touch of caramel sweetness, and some citrusy hops that cut through the richness. Mid-palate, you get subtle hints of toasted nuts and a whisper of licorice.

The bitterness is prominent but not overwhelming (around 60-70 IBU, if I had to guess) which balances the roasted malt backbone. The finish is long and dry, leaving behind a pleasant mix of grapefruit zest and mild smokiness.

Positives

Complex Flavor Profile: The interplay of roasted malts and bright hops is spot on. This isn’t an easy balance to nail, but Stockyard pulls it off with finesse.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and medium-bodied, it feels substantial without being heavy.
Versatility: While it’s bold enough to be enjoyed on its own, this beer could easily pair with smoky barbecue or a hearty stew.

Critiques

A Bit One-Dimensional on the Hop Front: While the roasted malts shine, the hop character leans heavily on pine and citrus without much depth. A touch of tropical or floral notes could’ve elevated it further.
Slight Astringency: Toward the end of the sip, there’s a mild bitterness that borders on harsh. It’s not a deal breaker, but it’s noticeable.

Final Thoughts

Stockyard Brewing’s Black IPA is a memorable brew that strikes a mostly solid balance between roasted malt richness and IPA level bitterness. While it has a few minor flaws, they don’t overshadow its overall quality. If you’re a fan of darker beers with a hoppy edge, this one’s worth a try.
