Stone Brewing IPA Review

by

Stone IPA is one of the flagships of Stone Brewing, and it’s been a favorite among hopheads since it first hit the scene in 1997. This beer represents the classic West Coast IPA style, delivering bold bitterness with a solid backbone of flavor. If you’re into hops, this beer will likely be right up your alley.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: The pour gives you a crystal-clear golden body with a thick, frothy white head that leaves lacing all the way down the glass. You just know you’re in for something hoppy when you see it.
  • Aroma: The nose is like a blast of pine, citrus, and dank resinous hops. You get immediate hints of grapefruit, lemon zest, and a little floral edge that’s typical of a West Coast IPA. There’s a faint malt sweetness in the background, but this beer screams hops from the start.
  • Taste: Stone IPA hits you with a sharp bitterness right up front. The hops lead the charge, bringing strong notes of pine and citrus—think grapefruit pith with a bit of lemon peel. As it settles on your palate, you get a hint of tropical fruit and some earthy undertones that keep it from being one-dimensional. The malt adds just enough caramel sweetness to balance the bitterness but doesn’t overpower the hops, which are clearly the star here.
  • Mouthfeel: Crisp and clean with a medium body, this IPA has a refreshing feel, but the bitterness definitely lingers. The carbonation is perfect for the style, giving you a nice fizz without being too aggressive.
  • Finish: Long and dry. The bitterness clings to your palate after each sip, which might be a bit much for some people, but for fans of hop-forward beers, it’s a signature part of the experience.

What We Loved

  • Hop Explosion: If you’re a hop lover, Stone IPA gives you exactly what you want—big, bold, resinous flavors with that citrus-pine punch.
  • Balance of Bitterness and Sweetness: While it’s definitely a hop-forward beer, the malt character adds just enough sweetness to keep things balanced. It’s not cloying, and the bitter finish makes you want to go back for another sip.
  • Classic West Coast IPA Style: Stone IPA is a great representation of the West Coast IPA genre. It’s a beer that helped define the style, and it’s still a standout, even with all the competition in today’s craft scene.

What Could Be Better:

  • Bitterness Might Be Intense for Some: If you’re not a die-hard IPA fan, the bitterness could be overwhelming. There’s not much in the way of juicy fruit flavors that you get with New England-style IPAs, and the dry finish may be too sharp for those who prefer a smoother, rounder beer.
  • Slightly One-Dimensional: While the hop profile is fantastic, the beer doesn’t evolve much as you drink it. Some might find it lacks complexity after the first few sips, especially compared to some of the more adventurous IPAs on the market today.

Final Rating

  • Appearance: 9/10
  • Aroma: 8.5/10
  • Taste: 8.5/10
  • Mouthfeel: 8/10
  • Overall Enjoyment: 8/10

Overall Thoughts

Stone IPA is an all-time classic for a reason. It’s a beer that defined the West Coast IPA style with its unapologetic hop-forward approach. If you love a bold, bitter IPA with plenty of pine and citrus, this is a go-to. For those who prefer a more mellow or juicy IPA, it might be a little too much on the bitter side, but it’s still a must-try for anyone exploring the world of craft beer.
